V For Very Awesome

I’ve seen a movie recently that proves that Hollywood is capable of still making good movies, it had a story, wasn’t a sequel, made you actually think and seeing it twice still left me wanting more.
V for Vendetta starred Natalie Portman as Evee, which took place in futaristic totalitarian London [did you catch that?] The story takes place during the downfall of the United States, and England has transformed it self into a clensed Communist nation. They believe that the U.S. has fallen due to Godlessness, while they follow strict rules such as curfew, no homosexuality, monitoring systems and no free speech.
Evee goes to meet her friend from the British Television Network (BTN) (Gordon) late at 11 PM, after curfew and is trapped by two guards who threaten her, she is saved by a masked man with amazing rhetoric, known only as the letter “V”.
After saving her “V” takes her to a rooftop of London where he plays music through the cities speaker and blows up several buildings at Midnight. Later that day “V” breaks into the BTN and broadcasts a message to the people of London about taking down their government a year from that day, on the 5th of November.
I don’t want to give away too much, but rather discuss this political movie.
Though very extreme, I believe that V for Vendetta brings up a few good points about the future. In the future there is a water shortage and people have water coupons, the United States is in Civil War and London has recently recovered from rioters which they control through a level of force. Their country has been clensed from anything they felt to be unholy and these people were put into jails and torture camps.
Like I said, extreme, but could this be the outcome of our world.
I believe that like any great and powerful empire that eventually the United States will fall. Do you think that the Romans ever thought that the would become nothing more than old buildings and memories in text books? As we become less and less accepting in the U.S. we are going towards more and more what V for Vendetta says about us.
I’m not trying to say that in 10 years we’re going to be living in chaos. But in hundreds of years I believe that this may be true.
On the opposite end of the spectrum in England, a nation who currently follows a light form of Socialism who in the movie turned completely Communist. If England wants to stay alive during the downfall of the U.S. this will probably be their outcome. In the movie they see the United States as Godless people, so in order to combat that from happening to their nation they rid themselves of any Godless people, but the Christian way of life they were seeking became corrupt in the end.
“…That if any form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it and institute a new one.” [Sound familiar?]
Terrorism is a topic brought up in V for Vendetta that is discussed. Evee wonders why V destorys buildings to bring his message across the the people and he says that the building is nothing more than a representation of the government. Is he a terrorist, or a freedom fighter?
Our founding fathers disguised themselves as Indians and dumped tons of tea into a Boston Harbor to get their message across, terrorists? Or freedome fighters? Where do we draw the line?
In some research I’ve found that Portman is very liberal, that she wore John Kerry shirts around on television during the election. Though I cannot agree with her there, I would havve to agree with her message in V for Vendetta and I highly recommend anyone who hasn’t seen it see it and anyone who has to see it again. [I play it again Monday =D]
